Welcome to the Supplies Page!
Beading is a very popular craft and you can find beading supplies in most craft stores and even
general merchandise stores like Walmart these days. The craft stores are increasing their selections
impressively, However, there are thousands (at least) of specialty stores and vendors that can be
accessed online. There are also specialty bead shops in many urban and suburban areas - I shop at
My Father's Beads in Coopersburg, PA. and Reed's Beads in Ambler, PA.
Local shops are a great place
to actually see and touch different types of beading supplies and most shops also offer classes.
Most beading magazines have directories of local bead shops and upcoming events.
Another good source of supplies are the large bead shows that held across the United States every year.
These shows bring together vendors and artisans - most also offer classes ranging from beginner through
masterwork levels. It gives the shopper a great opportunity for head-to-head comparisons of products.
The most basic supplies you need for off-loom weaving are beads, thread, and a needle. A flat working
surface is helpful and good lighting is essential. I typically use a magnifier on my lamp as well. You
also will need a sharp pair of scissors and roundnose and flat tip pliers. In general I use thread meant
for beading or Fireline fishing line. Regular cotton thread frays, breaks, and tangles easily. Beading
needles also make off-loom weaving easier - you need a small needle to make multiple passes through the
beads.
Some of the shows listed below travel across the country and others are held in one location annually.
I've attended Bead Fest several times in the Philadelphia area and enjoyed the workshops and marketplace.
It's a great opportunity to meet the artists and others who are obsessed with the same craft.
These stores are national chains and also sell their products online. It's worthwhile to join their mailing lists -
all three send paper and electronic coupons to subscribers. All three chains accept the other's paper coupons but
only accept their own electronic coupons.
